Preparation for an MRI Scan

Preparation for an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan is very important to ensure accurate and reliable diagnostic results. Below are general guidelines that patients should follow before undergoing an MRI scan:

01

Patient
Information

– Before the exam, the patient should be informed about the procedure and what to expect during the scan.

– If the patient has any concerns, they should discuss them with the doctor or the technologist before the procedure.

02

Fasting Period
(in certain cases)

– If the MRI involves the use of contrast (contrast agent), the patient may be required to refrain from eating or drinking for several hours before the scan.

– Generally, fasting is not required unless there are specific instructions from the attending physician.

03

Removal of Metal and Electronic Devices

– The patient must remove all metal objects before the scan, as MRI machines use powerful magnets. Metal objects can distort the images or even pose a risk of injury.

– Metal objects include items such as jewelry (rings, earrings, necklaces, etc.), watches, eyeglass frames, containers with perfumes or cosmetics, electronic devices like mobile phones and headphones, metal piercings or body modifications (e.g., nose or tongue piercings), as well as keys, pens, or other metallic objects.

– Certain implants or medical devices may be allowed to remain in the body, but the patient must inform the MRI center staff of any metal implants they have (e.g., pacemakers, hearing aids, cochlear implants, etc.).
