High diagnostic accuracy with the state-of-the-art Philips Achieva 1. 5T MRI scanner.

Our Diagnostic Centre, wishing to continue the tradition of excellent imaging in the field of MRI, has recently installed the state-of-the-art Philips Achieva 1. 5T MRI scanner to cover all MRI applications in all systems.

It is spacious, patient-friendly with an "open-type" tunnel design. Suitable for overweight patients up to 150 kg. During the examination there is the possibility of having an attendant next to the examinee.

For most magnetic resonance imaging tests, no special preparation is necessary. Unless your doctor asks you to avoid eating or drinking anything before the test, there are no restrictions. The doctor or technologist will ask you some questions before you undergo the test. You will be asked if you have any metal objects (artificial joints, artificial dentures, metal stents, etc.) in your body. You will be asked to remove any metal objects you are carrying on you. Even some cosmetics contain small amounts of metals, also it is better not to wear make-up.

Items to remove before entering the MRI scanner:

  • Wallet
  • Credit cards
  • Electronic devices such as mobile phones
  • Metal jewellery, watches
  • Keys, coins
  • Hairpins
  • Belts

When you make an appointment, please inform the secretariat:

  • If you have a referral from your doctor
  • If you have claustrophobia
  • If you have a history of an allergic reaction

When you arrive, do not forget to bring previous examinations with you.

You must arrive at the Medical Imaging Diagnostic Centre at least ten minutes before your scheduled appointment. Your waiting time for the examination is expected to be between 15 to 45 minutes depending on the type of examination.

If you are taking medicines for other conditions, take them normally in the morning after consulting your doctor. On the day of the test it is best to eat 3 hours before your exam or have a light breakfast if your appointment is in the afternoon.

If you bring artificial materials or devices (e.g. metallic prostheses, infusion devices, stents, artificial heart valves etc.) you must bring a certificate signed by the responsible clinical doctor that these materials are compatible with MT 1,5T or 3T. Otherwise, it is necessary to submit the specific technical characteristics of the above materials, in order to investigate their compatibility with the MRI scanner by the responsible Medical Physicist of the MRI Unit.

    MRIs cannot be performed on:

  • Patients with a heart pacemaker or prosthetic heart valves
  • Patients with cochlear implants
  • Presence of an intraocular foreign body consisting of iron
  • Older surgical clips or stents for aneurysms not compatible with the magnetic field
  • More generally, foreign bodies such as prosthetic limbs

An MRI scan examinee is not exposed to ionizing radiation. In many cases, however, patients might not feel comfortable with the examination due to claustrophobia, as they will have to remain still and lie down for a certain amount of time.

The specific MRI scanner of our centre, with its short length and its modern and friendly open design simplifies the examination for both patients and our staff. Excellent accessibility for claustrophobic and overweight patients is ensured, as well as easy examination of small children, since the attendant can be present in the room during the examination. Furthermore, due to its modern software, it performs most sequences extremely quickly, reducing the total examination time.

Also, for some MRI scans, you may not need to have your head in the machine at all, which dramatically reduces the feeling of claustrophobia.

In any case, the medical staff and technologists of our Centre are in contact with you throughout the examination to encourage and help you to successfully complete your examination.

If, however, you still find it difficult to control the anxiety you feel, we encourage you to talk to us so that together we can find the best solution for you.
